NCNG #9 Tender Trucks
Hi Group,
A friend and I are building a pair of NCNG #9s in 5" scale / 15" gauge live steam. We have good drawings of the locomotive and access to a nearly identical locomotive (Death Valley RR #2, also a Baldwin, is the same except the length and wheelbase have been stretched 2 feet), but the tender is another matter. I have some books and drawings that have appeared in magazines, but detailed tender drawings, especially of the trucks, would be very helpful. We are leaning toward building the arch bar trucks that the tender carried late in it's life but if we had the Baldwin drop equalizer truck drawings, we may build them instead.
Are the arch bar trucks the same as freight car trucks except with leaf springs instead of coils? I have seen glimpses of trucks in photos taken at the NCNG museum that appear to be the same, except they have coil springs.... Does anyone have pictures of these trucks at the museum? A trip to the museum is planned for this year...
The 2nd pic is a rough mock up of the engine, using a piece of steel channel the correct length of the frame, to test the tracking of the engine around curves. The "engineer" looks almost scale! Thanks guys.
Regards,
Jon |

Hello,
Sorry if this post appears twice. Catenry Video Productions has released a 60 minute video titled "SIERRA SHORTLINES" volume 2. It has about fifteen minutes on action on the NCNGRR, some fan trips, switching cars and sadly the abandonment of the line by #8 and crew. interview thoughout with KEN Yeo.

I don't believe I have ever seen Engine no 1's builder's plates. Now, I know how you got the colors for the drawing for No. 1. |

...Did you know that the cab on "Five" today came from scrapped Engine #7? It was installed in
1939 prior to sale to Universal Studios. Also shown here is "Five's" tender when we brought it
back in 1985... The logo and number could still be seen beyond the rust and Hollywood paint... |

...That photo was taken about ten years ago (the slide was initially "backwards"...I've since corrected it;-)
The standard gauge track closest has been removed, but the NCNG ties are still there.
Yes indeed... Much of the old road bed is still visible along Hwy. 174. |

How long ago did you take the pictures of the ties in Colfax? The right of way is still present in Chicago Park, near Lakewood Ln and Bear River pines. |

...Excellent! 'Have enjoyed many wonderful excursions with Mr. Darr throughout the 1980s & 90s!
He is among the very best when it comes to piecing and preserving this history. Now, if we can only get
him on-line ;-) Here's a pic of some NCNG ties in the Colfax yard near the end of the line... |

...The old line is most pronounced in the area of the (caved in) You Bet tunnel and along the ridge
between the old Bear River bridge and Long Ravine. Some of the cuts and traces of ballast can still be
seen, but you really have to look for them. The concrete footings for the Long Ravine viaduct (and old
Hwy. 40 bridge) are still there. It's best seen when water level is down 75 to 100 feet or so...
Now if you want a real treat - walk the right-away between Rollins lake and the two U.P. bridges that
cross Hwy. 80 near Cape Horn. The old line and the bypass parallel each other for about 1/8th of a
mile before coming together. We still find the small spikes on the old section which is ballasted
w/ mine rock and shale, and larger spikes (for the heavier rail) on the new section ballasted with river
rock. This area has largely remained unchanged since the track was removed in 1943. The attached
photo shows the Long Ravine Viaduct (crossing Hwy. 40) from the cab of engine no. 5. The level of
Rollins Lake is near the same as the top of the bridge today... |
